The Early Chapter: South Africa Hold the Upper Hand
The Afghanistan National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team Timeline began on the biggest international stage rather than through a long bilateral series.
According to Cricket South Africa and ICC records cited around the 2024 bilateral series announcement, the teams had previously met in two ODIs at the 2019 and 2023 World Cups and in three T20Is at the 2010, 2016 and 2024 T20 World Cups before their first bilateral ODI series in 2024. South Africa won all of those earlier meetings.
That early record explains why the Afghanistan National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team Stats initially leaned heavily toward South Africa.
But Afghanistan were steadily developing. Their cricket had already produced some major tournament performances, and the team was becoming increasingly comfortable against established opponents.
The big question was simple: when would Afghanistan finally get their first win?
The answer came in 2024.
2019: South Africa Win the First World Cup ODI Meeting
The 2019 World Cup provided the first ODI chapter in this rivalry.
Afghanistan were bowled out for 125, with Imran Tahir taking four wickets and Chris Morris taking three. South Africa then chased the target comfortably, with Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock putting together a 104-run opening partnership.
South Africa won by nine wickets.
For anyone checking an Afghanistan National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team Match Scorecard, this match looks fairly straightforward.
But cricket is rarely just about the final numbers.
For Afghanistan, playing a major cricket nation like South Africa at a World Cup was another step in their international development. For South Africa, it was a match where their experience showed.
2023: Afghanistan Push Harder
Four years later, the two sides met again at the ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad.
This time, Afghanistan were far more competitive.
Afghanistan made 244/9, with Azmatullah Omarzai producing a brilliant unbeaten 97. He struck seven fours and three sixes and carried Afghanistan through a difficult middle and late phase of the innings.
South Africa, however, held their nerve.
Rassie van der Dussen scored an unbeaten 76, while Andile Phehlukwayo added 39*. South Africa eventually won by five wickets.
Rashid Khan still gave Afghanistan plenty to cheer about, taking two important wickets, including Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen.
This was an important stage in the Afghanistan National Cricket Team vs South Africa National Cricket Team Timeline because Afghanistan had shown that they could make South Africa work for the result.
2024 T20 World Cup: A Painful Semi-Final
If you thought the 2023 meeting was competitive, the 2024 T20 World Cup brought a completely different kind of drama.
Afghanistan reached their first Men’s T20 World Cup semi-final and faced South Africa in Trinidad.
South Africa’s bowlers were ruthless.
Afghanistan were bowled out for only 56. Marco Jansen took 3/16, Kagiso Rabada took 2/14 and Anrich Nortje took 2/7. Tabraiz Shamsi then finished the innings with 3/16.
South Africa chased the tiny target and won by nine wickets, securing their first-ever Men’s T20 World Cup final appearance.
The South Africa vs Afghanistan T20 World Cup meeting was therefore a landmark game for both teams, but for very different reasons.
South Africa moved into their first T20 World Cup final. Afghanistan, meanwhile, had still achieved their best-ever finish in the tournament.
